Alternative pop duo Migrant Motel has just unleashed their latest single, “Mr. Robot”, a cinematic tale about an artificial being longing to feel.
“Mr. Robot” is a dark, atmospheric track that seamlessly blends rock and electronic elements with a healthy dose of pop sensitivity, crafting a unique sound that support the subject of technology and AI. The song kicks off with a melancholic energy, almost referencing the human element of the conversation, then moves into an explosive, distorted chorus. With diverse influences such as Nothing But Thieves and composer Ennio Morricone, Migrant Motel creates a complex listening experience.
The song focuses on a narrator that wishes they could feel, a machine that knows it’s not set up to experience human emotions, yet still longs for some sort of reality. Singer David Stewart explains the origins of the song: “One day I was playing around with Chat GPT and thought it’d be interesting to ask how it felt, what that robot felt, where it was in its AI experience, and asked it to write a poem. This is where the concept was born, a machine telling me it feels numb and sad because it will never be a human (…). Some of the lyrics [also] came out of that Chat GPT experiment”.
