Post-hardcore band FieldHockey has released their latest single, the corrosive “Taxes On Taxidermy,” featuring Left To Suffer vocalist Taylor Barber.

“Taxes On Taxidermy” is full of aggression, with a potent combination of gritty guitars and howling vocals that seamlessly go from melodic to guttural, in a way that is almost anxiety-inducing in the best way possible. Its high energy, fast-paced first half is vertiginous, creating a chaotic vibe that comes to a sudden stop as we reach the second half: a sludgy, heavier sound takes over as the vocals get deeper and deeper. The somewhat unexpected turn stops you in your tracks, but it’s not entirely out of place; the emotional elements of the song escalate to the point where the final breakdown is the most fitting conclusion.

The brutality in the sound goes hand in hand with the words, as if moving in and out of consciousness. There’s a distinct sense of rage and anguish that dominates, weaved in with the despair of exclaiming “one more time, and I’ll get it.” The band elaborates on the emotions tied to the song:

“I wrote this song with the feeling of never being enough, having yourself cut down or cut apart, and then being put back together in others’ image with the feeling of never getting it right, but there’s always next time right?”.
