We all know the drill: the same feelings, the same person, the same place, the same excuse. But above all, the same consequences the day after. We have all been guilty of it: letting a person in, possibly not for the first time, and knowing we have made a mistake.
Kennedy Cash, an independent LA-based R&B musician, has built her career by cultivating a following on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. She has released hit singles like “Sam,” “LET DOWN,” and most recently, “sucker punch.”
“sucker punch” has a message that is simpler to relate to than to understand. It is about the loop that you find yourself trapped in with a certain someone—someone who is more of a vice than a person. It starts with the call or a text, one you know you should not answer, and yet you do. The consequences come afterwards.
Cash has learned how to master both the lyrics and the tune of her music. From the first couple of notes in “sucker punch,” you know it will be one of those songs that sounds the way it feels. The lyrics transport you back to the moment of knowing you will break the no-contact, the promise you made yourself. But the next thought is always this: you can deal with the consequences tomorrow.
