Her sound is dynamic, riveting, and innovative, making Maggie Andrew a voice to grow with in the alt-pop scene. This is to be expected, as she has worked with trailblazers like blackbear, Ash Riser (Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul), Doc McKinney (The Weeknd, Drake), and Yeti Beats (Doja Cat, SZA), who have helped shape her artistry. Last year, Maggie made her presence known after winning CBC Music’s Searchlight competition, earning honors at the ECMA and Music Nova Scotia Awards, headlining stages at SOMMO Festival and JUNO Block Party, and performing at The Great Escape and BreakOut West. With the release of her new single, “How to Sing for Money,” she continues to flourish—and she lets us in on her secret on how to do so.
On “How to Sing for Money,” Maggie cheekily addresses the way that the music industry can profit on someone’s pain. There’s a coolness and confidence to the track, which is felt through its indie rock groove and relaxed pop melodies. Still, Maggie speaks to those dealing with heartbreak, singing, “When your heart is halfway broken / Tears are running down your face / Could show you how to break it open / Pour it on the page.” Behind the hurt is money to be made, as Maggie insists, “I’ll teach you how to sing for money, baby / Everybody loves a fool / I’ll teach you how to sing for money, baby / I could make you look so cool.”
About “How to Sing for Money,” Maggie explains,
“It’s kind of funny how being an artist is mostly just singing about your misfortunes in life and people relating to them. This song is written from the perspective of speaking to someone who did you dirty, and now they’re crawling back to you because you’re famous and make cool songs. So, you go ahead and teach them how to do it too.”
