Jillian Jacqueline’s love is a “Cult Classic” in latest single

Date:

American country singer-songwriter Jillian Jacqueline has released another single ahead of her upcoming album MotherDaughterSisterWife, releasing on the 17th of October. The single “Cult Classic” blends elements of old Western with modern pop to deliver a relaxing tune about a love withstanding time.

Starting off the song are film voiceovers and a taped plucked guitar to dramatically set the “old-timey” scene. However, some tight and crisp drums ground the song in the modern day and serve as a contrast to the heavily panned plucked instruments. These plucks also give a nice variety of textures that stops the rhythm from sounding monotonous. A steel guitar stuck in the background seems to only repeatedly remind the listener that you’re listening to a country artist. Some synths in the post-chorus join the steel guitar and work well to offer a unique tonality, but these are unfortunately kept to a minimum throughout the song.

Jacqueline credits her husband as inspiration for this song, saying “my husband and I are one of my favorite love stories.” The song is filled with references to film with lines such as, “loves a script that we avoid / but the plot twist is worth it,” found in the second verse. The song doesn’t aim to overcomplicate itself, rather sticking with the emotions we know: “when you love it so much you hate it.” “Cult Classic” is best heard on a relaxing drive home or chill afternoon.

Jillian Jacqueline’s “Cult Classic” lends more into the pop direction than the other singles off of her upcoming album and offers audiences a new taste into what is to come in MotherDaughterSisterWife, out 17th October.
