On April 30th, Indigo De Souza announced her new album, Precipice, is coming out on July 25th via Loma Vista Recordings. The announcement came alongside the release of the lead single, “Heartthrob,” complete with a colorful music video

De Souza opened up about “Heartthrob” in an Instagram post, sharing:

“I wrote ‘Heartthrob’ as a way to help process something that is often hard to talk about– the harmful ways I’ve been taken advantage of in my physical memory. ‘Heartthrob’ is about harnessing anger, and turning it into something powerful and embodied. It’s about taking back my body and my experience. It’s a big f*ck you to the abusers of the world. A sarcastic, angry cry for all bodies that have ever been touched in harmful ways.”

“Heartthrob” is a bright, almost euphoric summer jam. The chugging, energetic rhythm and bright guitars are almost reminiscent of Paramore’s After Laughter (2017). There’s something cathartic in the pairing of heavy themes with upbeat music, and De Souza expertly channels that catharsis in this single. Singing lyrics, “He really tricked me, I let him touch me where he wanted… Didn’t know the difference between loving and haunting,” while dancing in a bounce house, De Souza really captures the “both/and,” phenomenon that so many experience when healing from trauma.

Precipice follows the indie rocker’s 2023 album All of This Will End, and surprise EP WHOLESOME EVIL FANTASY (2024). De Souza is stylistically diverse, with hints of many genres across her body of work from grunge to soul and even electronic pop.

In a press release, De Souza said of the new album:

“Life feels like always being on the edge of something without knowing what that something is. Music gives me ways to harness that feeling. Ways to push forward in new directions.”

Precipice is bound to be an album full of feeling. De Souza is known for her intimate, honest songwriting, and she has been through the ringer. Her home was destroyed by Hurricane Helene in September 2024, after which she rallied support for herself and her community alike. The North Carolina songbird has built her career on feeling and loving deeply.

“Heartthrob” is now available wherever you stream your music. You can catch Indigo De Souza on the road for a few Midwest tour dates this summer, at Bumbershoot Music Festival on August 30th, and a couple European dates in the fall. Tickets are available here
