Highlighting 19 Years of Deftones’ fifth studio album ‘Saturday Night Wrist’

Date:

On Oct. 31st, 2006, Deftones released their fifth studio album Saturday Night Wrist.

Known for its heavy shoegaze influence and themes of addiction, trust, and growing pains, Saturday Night Wrist is an album that helped determine the fate of one of music’s most beloved rock ensembles.

Despite the band being strained in the creation of developing this record, Deftones have reached new levels of success; the album debuted at number 10 on Billboard’s 200 Chart during its first week, sold over 76,000 copies total, and Alternative Press awarded it a perfect score of 100. Some fan favorites from the record, including “Cherry Waves,” “Hole in the Earth,” and “Beware,” have piqued the interests of listeners across all alternative subgenres.

Although bittersweet, with this being Chi Cheng’s final project before his passing the following year, Deftones turned a new leaf by taking time off for a decade before the release of their sixth studio album, Gore — a distinct contrast to the angst that was heard in Saturday Night Wrist.

19 years later, generations of Deftones fans commemorated this album’s anniversary in creative ways. From Instagram to TikTok dedications alike, we can all agree in looking forward to the festivities in store for the 20th anniversary next year.
