Boston based post punk band Gretchen Shae & The Middle Eight has just unleashed their latest single, “Pretty Little Lies”, a seductive illustration of fabricated stories. The single is accompanied by a lyric video created by drummer and graphic artist Nick Mehos, inspired by 90’s shoegaze visuals.

“Pretty Little Lies” explores the idea of being lured into someone’s web of deception, yet it lifts the veil for the audience to see through it. Gretchen Shae’s enchanting vocals evoke the intoxicating nature of the lies being told, allowing the listener to see them for what they are. The truth is the real focus of the song, the band explains: “the truth always rises no matter how long she is kept in bondage”. The song does not celebrate lies, it ridicules them.

Describing themselves as “Grungy Nightmare Before Christmas”, the sound is raw, sensual and a little bit spooky. “Pretty Little Lies” smoothly goes from enticing to confronting, with bluesy guitars and a driving rhythm section that explodes into a heavier sound in the chorus. The track evokes the feelings of aggravation we experience when faced with an elaborate lie, creating an intense emotional response.
