Regret, loss of love and wanting to find some peace are some of the themes that Franciso Martin tackles on his latest song, “Friend.” His first song in a year, Martin plays with his electric indie-pop sound, reminding us of what made his music so authentically him to begin with.

Now, about five years since Martin made a name for himself during the 18th season of American Idol, the 25-year-old singer is seamlessly genre-bending on the self-produced “Friend,” a song that deals with self-blame when you’re physically distant from the person you love. He sings about “if only [he] hadn’t said too much,” despite distance and separation, and Martin longs for a second chance to make things right. Dripping with melancholy, he lays his heart on the line to beg for forgiveness in this jazz-induced, indie-pop showcase. With emotionally charged intensity like passion, anger and a lingering heartache, we see Martin mourning the love he once had: “I don’t want to see us end / Remember way back when you were my friend…”

Bridging the gap between his singer-songwriter vibes that started it all, Martin reminds us of who he is as an artist on the indie-alt, jazz-inspired “Friend.” With a hint of the vibe of Grammy Award nominee and singer Benson Boone, Martin proves he’s ready to come back more powerful than ever in this soul-stirring track — and bend genres while he’s at it.
