When the fires continue to burn and smoke engulfs all you’ve ever known, it can be hard to dig up optimism or search for light in trying times. However, Brock Geiger—a Canadian indie rock/pop artist—explains that dwelling on uncontrollable, consuming events only sets us back and should be instead replaced by hope and appreciation on new single, “Early August Rain,” from his upcoming debut album, Some Nights.
As a Canadian musician, Brock Geiger witnessed the devastation of the western Canadian Wildfires that occurred in 2023 while dealing with his own personal struggles. When everything felt like it was on fire and going terribly wrong, he found his rain—acceptance of uncertainty—which extinguished the guilt and fear that had come from the daunting fires once he realized they were out of his control.
“A perfect storm defeats the perfect day,” Brock sings in the second line of “Early August Rain.” Optimism is woven throughout the song, transforming it into a convincing piece that has strong potential to open up those with unwanted or unwarranted hopeless mindsets. The lines “Maybe the void is still a place that shines” and “Never mind the cold when the heat still rises” symbolize Brock’s shift from letting the smoke take over to looking beyond the grey for the light.
The single’s mystifying electronic instrumentation, paired with smooth, digestible vocals, puts listeners in a calm, reassuring trance, allowing them to soak in all its layers. If Brock Geiger’s goal was to make a song that embodies the saying, “everything’s going to be alright,” he achieved it.

“’Early August Rain’ was written while I was watching parts of my personal world go up in flames while simultaneously witnessing the wildfires in Canada last summer. This song became an outlet for practicing acceptance in the face of things beyond my control, evolving into a personal anthem of resilience. The title is quite literal, but thematically, I was drawn to the relationship between the natural world, and how we navigate our own storms.”
