Briston Maroney channels his psychedelic rock mastermind once again in new single, “Better Than You”

Date:

With another electric, psychedelic rock single, “Better Than You,” indie-rocker, Briston Maroney, invites us into the world of JIMMY, created by channeling his unfiltered, tie-dye wearing, gizzard-chewing true self.

“Better Than You” is rock’s best friend, containing all there is to love about the electricity and emotion of the genre. From the blood-bumping electric guitar solos to the attention-grabbing, raw vocals, Maroney takes the spotlight as a rockstar who isn’t afraid to show the side of himself that has been eager to be let loose. As the fourth release off his third album, JIMMY, out May 2, the taste of creative freedom and authenticity has been lingering from single to single and is surely bound to carry over to the full album.

Theoretically, the easy route would be creating a song drenched in the self-centered idea of wanting to reign superior over everybody, including the one individual that you’ve always seen as greater than yourself. I mean, everybody wants to be the best, right? However, Maroney digs a little deeper to channel a specific knack for ambition (fueled by jealousy) to stand taller than just one person, not everyone.

The chorus, “I don’t want to be the best, just better than you” is a head scratcher—is it humble to lack the desire to be the greatest or egocentric to seek power over a specific individual? Regardless of the logistics of this complicated phenomenon, it’s simply rooted in human nature and Maroney has made it clear that alienating himself is out of the picture.
