San Diego native Brent de la Cruz has sweet, summery, nostalgic vibes practically down to a science in his latest single, “Day to Day.” He first appeared on the music scene in 2019, independently releasing five singles. Just as he began to generate some industry buzz, de la Cruz stepped away for several extended breaks between releases to hone his craft and develop his skills. All his hard work seems to be paying off, with his EP NOIR garnering nearly 2 million collective streams since its February release.
“Day to Day” follows NOIR‘s momentum, and certainly builds on its energy. De la Cruz’s inspiration is derived from not only his favorite artists like Frank Ocean and MGMT, but also memories of his youth: late nights skateboarding through empty San Diego streets and parks. At its core, “Day to Day” is a smooth blend of alternative, indie, and bedroom pop. Something about the way he mixes lo-fi beats with slinky, saturated guitar and vocals just makes you think of driving in a car full of friends with the windows down.
De la Cruz explores routine and longing in this upbeat track, with lyrics that tell an engaging story (“so come my way, my golden child / I’ma show you around this place that I call home”). You can hear the care that went into the composition of this song in all the small things that you might not catch on your first listen: the way certain lines reverberate, the different non-musical, ambient sounds layered underneath the mix, and the oscillation through different degrees of fidelity throughout. “Day to Day” is a delightfully creative track, sure to be a hit with fans of Mk.gee and other more experimental artists.
“Day to Day” is available to stream wherever you listen to music.
