Mariah Carey does not need an introduction. Anyone who’s experienced the Christmas season on Planet Earth knows who she is. Her smash hit, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” still earns Carey between $2 and $3 billion annually, even after 31 years. She is a pop and R&B icon, decorated with over 150 music awards and more than 300 nominations over the 36-year span of her career. While she never really went anywhere, Mariah Carey is back in a big way with the release of her new single, “Type Dangerous.”
The R&B jam is built around a sample of “Eric B is President” by rapper and producer Eric Barrier. Co-written with huge hip-hop names including Anderson .Paak and Rae Khalil, “Type Dangerous” is rumored to be the lead single for Carey’s upcoming 16th studio album. Her last new release was the 2018 album Caution, though she has kept fans sated with robust anniversary editions of older albums since, the most recent of which, Emancipation of Mimi (20th Anniversary Edition), only released one week before “Type Dangerous.”
“Type Dangerous” is playful and percussion-heavy (unsurprising, with Anderson .Paak’s involvement). Carey pokes fun at ex-flings (“Computer boy toy, he was fun for a while / ’til I caught him on the web, hackin’ other girls’ files”), showcasing the lower range of her signature luscious vocals. The laid-back tune has proven to be a certified earworm, with several viral videos circulating on TikTok about one particularly hilarious lyric: “Hit the little girls’ room to powder my nose / Then came in three hatin’ ass hoes / They don’t know the meaning of water, nor soap / I don’t have time for the rigamarole.”
“Type Dangerous,” is available to stream wherever you listen to music.
