Aidan Bissett—a rising indie pop singer-songwriter—questions whether the ongoing highs in a relationship are eventually going to be met with inevitable lows in new single, “2 much 2 handle.” When things are going well and on the up-and-up, it’s hard to escape the gut feeling that a decline is eventually coming. The anticipation of the low can feel even worse than the low itself, chipping away at the pleasure the highs bring.
“2 much 2 handle” is Bissett’s third single off his debut album, shut up and love me, coming out July 25. The album’s other two singles, “are we in love yet?” and “ricochet” explore relationships in different lights, reflecting on the toxicity of some and the fresh, new beginnings of others. The seemingly complex nature of love and relationships has opened doors for Bissett, giving him an outlet to write catchy, fun, but also honest and reflective tunes that many can relate to.
From the melancholy, auto-tune opening verse to the upbeat, playful chorus, “2 much 2 handle” has proven itself to be a wanderer of genres and tempos. Its colorful sonic landscape makes it a unique and addictive attention-grabbing tune that pushes the boundaries of what a typical pop song does. As an extra visual element, Bissett released a visualizer that features him walking as people pass him by, representing the unpredictability and unsettling feeling of not knowing what could happen next. This track gives a home to the constant questioning of whether the pace of the relationship is too slow, too fast, or just right while balancing on the instability of a new love. He elaborates:
“This one feels like a stop-and-go rollercoaster. It captures the feeling of hitting your highest peaks and your lowest lows. It’s about anticipation — you’re going up and up, but the fall never happens.”
Bissett is also bringing these tracks on the road across the United States in support of his debut album, shut up and love me. General tickets go on sale May 16 and are available here.
