Max Pope voices the complicated feeling of being stuck at the “borderline” in new single

Date:

Max Pope—a London-based musician and songwriter—addresses a complicated feeling of disconnection from a sense of purpose and the struggle to find where he stands in his new single, “borderline.” Making a comeback, this single marks Pope’s first release since his 2022 album, Counting Sheep

On the single, Pope’s Spotify bio reads: “it’s a bit rougher and darker around the edges—and probably the most honest thing I’ve made.” From the start, Pope draws in a lo-fi and R&B sound that intersects with an alternative world, creating a catchy, groovy tune that feels genre-less and exploratory. The hazy, dream-like instrumentation, mixed with distorted guitar and layered vocals, defines the song’s rhythmic value—making it a stand-out, sonically unique track.

The lyrics voice complication and confusion—a story of trying to make sense of who he was while “stuck at the borderline.” Pope shares that while in LA, he was overcome with a feeling of disconnect and anonymity from the city and its people, causing him to fall out of touch with his purpose and ability to distinguish what was worthwhile from what was a waste of time. “borderline” explores the constricting power of this feeling—something that is deeply vulnerable and difficult to put into words.
