Maddie Regent unravels the threads of a former relationship on “Turtleneck”

Date:

When we last heard from Maddie Regent, she was turning an awkward run-in with an ex into an emotional synth-pop jam on “The wolf.” It was her first single of 2025 but the third single from her upcoming debut album, On the phone with my mom. The album is set to be released in May, and it will contain all the elements that Maddie’s fans love – infectious melodies, dreamy vocals, and wistful coming-of-age lyrics. With her new single “Turtleneck,” she continues to usher fans into the mystical world of her new album.

On “Turtleneck,” Maddie unravels the threads of a former relationship, much like one would untangle the loose ends on a turtleneck sweater. She paints a hazy indie pop oasis where she can softly sort through the memories of her past. Here, she sings, “I wish that you could see me way out here in outer space,” floating away from this person but also plunging deeper into the cosmic world of old feelings. As much as she indulges in the affection and love that she felt, she is eager to “shake, shake, erase” the relationship from her mind.

About “Turtleneck,” Maddie shares,

‘Turtleneck’ is about how lost you can get after getting out of a relationship. It’s tempting to ground yourself in the memory of what was, rather than accepting what is.”

On the phone with my mom is set to be released May 16.
