Weekly Roundup: September 12

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. Lots of fun pop this week, but also some really emotionally vulnerable tracks.
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “Happy People” – joe p
“On ‘Happy People,’ joe p compares himself to those out there who seem to ‘smile all the time.’ Over rhythmic alt-rock music, he gives us imploring vocals that yearn for a carefree lifestyle. By the time we get to the chorus, joe opens up by declaring, ‘Happy people always get it right / We’d probably hurt ourselves if we tried,’ accentuating the anthemic moment with catchy ‘Oos and Ahs.’”
– Christine Sloman

2. “Hey” – Phoebe Go
“Written after a family tragedy, ‘Hey’ is incredibly vulnerable. Phoebe reveals that she wrote the song after her cousin’s passing; she explains, ‘I didn’t know how to make sense of it all. I still don’t, and I don’t think I ever will, but this song is really my way of coming to grips with that.’”
– Lexi Whitney

3.  “Tonight” – Phoenix ft. Ezra Koenig
“’Tonight’ finds Thomas Mars duetting with Koenig over a track that recalls the band’s early college-rock heyday; it’s the first time the band has collaborated with a guest vocalist, and their two voices fit in seamlessly on the track. If you’ve been looking for jams akin to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and the soundtrack to your 2010s experiences, they’re in high supply here.”
– Jones Willingham

4. “SLEEP” – Baby Cate
“[Baby Cate’s] new single, ‘SLEEP’ is also self-written and produced. The song takes on a stylistically rhythmic tone to show her love for hip-hop rap music and interest in multi-instrumental and mix engineering. The track details a perfect dream in which she is able to quit her job and still be successful, but then has to wake up in the morning, wishing the dream could last longer.”
– Callie Hummel
