Review: Lord Huron at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans

Date:

Sunday night there was a revival at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans. Indie Rock royalty Lord Huron stopped by during their summer/fall tour.

Opening the evening was Hazel English. She looked like a little bird and her voice perfectly matched her look. Her ability to harmonize with her guitar player was dream-like. Her voice had an ethereal quality that hearkened back to Mazzy Star. It was a great start to the evening.

For full disclosure, I was not fully aware of Lord Huron before Sunday night. I had heard the name but can’t honestly say I’d given them much of a chance. After their performance at the Orpheum Theater, I can now state that I am a huge fan of Lord Huron. Their performance was one of the most inexplicably serene yet electric shows I’ve been to. The light show was a perfect match to their sound. Lead singer Ben Schneider’s ability to captivate an audience whether he’s standing in front of the mic or jumping around the stage is not to be taken lightly. Right from the opening number “Love Like Ghosts” from their sophomore album Strange Traits, the mood was set for what was to be an evening of simply great music. They played a bunch of songs from their newest album Vide Noir but ended the evening with coming back to the stage to perform “Ends of the Earth” and “The Night We Met”.

The guys from Michigan played an exhaustive two hour set, but their energy never wavered. There aren’t many dates left on this tour, so I’d suggest getting to one of their shows as soon as possible.
