Recent News: Shares her latest single “Head Down” ahead of her debut album made it!, out May 8 through Fire Records.
Through her gritty balance of ethereal dreaminess and raw catharsis, New York City indie rock starlet lucky break is an artist who thrives on a powerful expression of dichotomy. Since releasing her debut single “Burning String” in 2024, the singer has established for themselves an artistry that is equal parts whimsical and grounded, writing songs that explore love, sadness, and joy through a heavy, ’90s rock-inspired musicality. After making a name for herself as an indie-alt trailblazer — even earning praise from rock legend Melissa Auf der Maur — lucky break now prepares for the release of her debut full-length album made it!, out May 8 via Fire Records.
Ahead of the release, lucky break shares the album’s latest single, “Head Down,” alongside its coinciding music video, directed by collaborator Margaret Elle. Capturing raw, DIY shots of lucky break around the city of Los Angeles, the singer displays herself as both holy and undeniably mortal.
Speaking on the video, Elle says, “Walking around and riding public transit in Los Angeles feeling like a fallen angel — I think lot of young women can relate. A lot of the music video visuals for lucky break come about from us walking around with a camera and hoping something turns out and it just always does. When working with lucky break, I so strongly feel this telepathic connection because our crazy abstract visions align so easily.”
A track that explores society’s constant need for instant gratification, “Head Down” continues to embody the artistic balance that lucky break always brings to their artistry. While the song’s lyrics are dark and sorrowful, the video’s infectious radiance decorates the music with a shimmery glow.
“Heads Down” arrives ahead of the artist’s introductory album, produced by Grammy-nominated engineer Jessica Thompson. Capturing the most transformative years of lucky break’s life, made it! was written after she fell in love for the first time, and the record ultimately captures the passion, heartbreak, and bittersweet growth that followed the relationship.
“made it! captures my life from 19 to 23 as I was going through major transitions, finding my inner compass and figuring out how to live in alignment with my values,” lucky break says of the album. “I solidified the sound of the record by blending everything I grew up listening to — from pop music and country music — and inspiration from ’90s alternative indie like Pavement and Liz Phair to Lucinda Williams, John Prine and Joni Mitchell found their way into the album as well.”
Although it’s only her debut album, made it! shows lucky break as the intentional and talented indie-alt songwriter they truly are. Her music is for the girls who wear both smudged eyeliner and angel wings, who scrape high heels on rough sidewalks, and who always search for that glimmering light in a world full of gray.
lucky break just recently kicked off a run of U.S. tour dates, starting with a showcase at SXSW in March. Over the next few months, the singer will play several shows across San Fransisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Memphis.
