xoxodubstep steps into the world of pop with “If You Love Me”

Date:

To wrap up 2024, xoxodubstep released their newest single “If You Love Me.” It’s a new sound for the artist, attempting to implement a pop sound into their usually dubstep music. It’s a blend of genres one wouldn’t immediately think to mix but xoxodubstep is a genius in the experimental.

The musical composition of the song caters to more contemporary pop rhythmically but has surprises throughout the song. It holds softer tones with buildups and drops like traditional dubstep, but the drops are not over the top or necessarily intense with the bass. When the song initially starts, it’s a slower tempo introduction led by a soft piano accompanied by an upbeat drum melody. The more electronic sound comes in about a third of the way in and it switches in and out of the more mellow pop melody to upbeat dubstep.

While the lyricism wasn’t what stood out in the electro-driven song, the pop elements that are highlighted allow the listener to hear the chorus of the song. The lyrics have a tone of heartbreak and trying to decipher both the hurt and the love one can feel simultaneously. Having what could be considered more somber lyrics with such a bright melody was an interesting choice, but one that requires more attention to lyrical composition to understand the layers and depth in the track. It’s the type of song in which you’ll hear something new after every listen.

Overall, xoxodubstep is broadening their audience, experimenting with new sounds and genres. The two contrasting melodies blending together to make one track shows the level of artistry and skill they truly have.
