Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to.
Here are some of the highlights:
1. “The News” – Paramore
Paramore released “The News” from their upcoming album, This is Why, last Thursday, bringing an exceptional angsty rock track. The song feels like an ode to the classic Paramore sound, with Hayley Williams’ powerful vocals, boomy guitars, and hard-hitting percussion. Even after all this time, Paramore is still improving on their sound with every release.

2. “Con Mi Coqueta” – jame minogue
Combining elements of indie pop music with those of traditional bachata, jame gives us a new holiday jam we can add to our seasonal playlists. Rounded out with the merry sound of sleigh bells, “Con Mi Coqueta” is an earnest love song about spending the holidays with those you care about the most, especially a new love interest or crush. Even though the girl jame sings about isn’t perfect, he still wants her to be by his side, sipping on coquitos and moving to the music.

3. “Kill Her Freak Out” – Samia
Samia’s Pink Ballon / Sea Lions EP features 4 tracks; “Pink Balloon” and “Sea Lions” are gorgeous piano ballads, and “Mad At Me” is a shimmering collaboration with papa mbye. The EP closes with the razor-sharp, Lucy Dacus-esque “Kill Her Freak Out.” Look out for Samia’s sophomore album, Honey, out on 1/27/23.

4. “Yun (with Erykah Badu)” – RM
In “Yun” (with Erykah Badu), RM reaffirms continually, “I wanna be a human ‘fore I do some art.” He references personal identity struggles between being a rapper who focuses on the ranking of technique, skill, and agility versus being someone who uses their creativity to connect with others before seeing them as competition. Anecdotal admission of this is what makes his writing so impactful: it’s not just a fairy tale, it’s his story.
