Originally from Kansas, Nashville transplant katie MAC has established herself in the local pop scene. “Wannabe” is the latest of a string of singles following the success of her 2024 sophomore album Emotional Gymnastics.
After her 2024 single “Not My Ex” went viral on TikTok, katie MAC has been racking up the streams and is trying to recreate that success while gaining a dedicated fanbase. On her new single, “Wannabe,” she taps into themes such as family dynamics, body insecurities, and jealousy, making it a relatable pop anthem. Katie adds:
“People will find their own story in the lyrics and be reminded that healing is a lifelong journey with ups and downs along the way.”
With somewhat minimal, typical pop verses, “Wannabe” explodes into a surprisingly edgy and energetic chorus drenched in autotune, booming hyperpop-esque kicks, and an overall more interesting production. With the opening chorus lyrics, “God I wish that girl was me / I’m such a fucking wannabe,” the saturated autotune emotion reaches a quick fever pitch that is really the highlight of the song.
2025 promises to be a big year of releases for katie MAC and “Wannabe” is an exciting way to start things off.
