The New York collective VRSTY taps into some Super Bowl fun covering Rauw Alejandro and Bad Bunny’s iconic song “qué pasaría.” The collective, made up of Joey Varela, Javy Dorrejo, Chris Cody, and Paul Gregory, is known for their genre-blending songs. Singer Joey Tyler was inspired to do the cover by his culture and deep love for Spanish music.
The original song has a slow, seductive intro that leads into a more reggaeton-based beat as the chorus comes in, but in VRSTY’s version there’s more of a pop influence. There’s an overall house music feel to the song with extra refrains and reverb from the original that makes it stand out in its own way. Most interestingly, about halfway into the cover a heavier, more intense melody comes in with heavy drums that gives it a rock influence, as well.
Rauw Alejandro and Bad Bunny, in their own way, also have different sounds that managed to mesh into this song despite being in similar genres, and you can see that same essence in VRSTY’s take of the song.
VRSTY managed to make an iconic song their own, solidifying how blending so many genres can create something so unique. The more intense and dramatized melodic compositions really give the lyrics a life of their own, as well. The lyrics are very passionate and adding this layer intensified the in the best way possible.
With covers like these, we’re excited what else VRSTY has up their sleeve as they go on the road supporting Fire From The Gods. Tickets to their upcoming tour dates can be found here.
