Tom A. Smith’s “Put On A Record Tommy” is the nostalgia we needed

Date:

21-year-old Tom A. Smith just released his newest EP, with one of the notable tracks being “Put On A Record Tommy.” It sounds like it’s straight off an A24 soundtrack, and I mean that as the highest of compliments.

The young Sunderland-based artist really took us back in time with this one. Its ’70s-inspired melodic sound paired with the string percussion and spoken lyrics create a unique nostalgic sound. A throwback style like this one is hard to pull off, but here it’s done genuinely well. It sounds like it belongs over a montage of teens in a sci-fi movie. It’s nostalgic but can still hold its own, and the chorus is catchy but simple, so you’re singing along by the end of the song.

There’s even some genre-blending within the song — indie and rock fans alike, along with any fans of 70s pop, are going to enjoy this one.
