Alternative rock band The Haunt are enthusiastically forgiving themselves in their newest single “Bad Omen.”
Singer Anastasia Grace Haunt delivers untempered vocals over brother Max Haunt’s daring guitar, Nick Lewert’s energetic up-tempo drums and Nat Smallish’s invigorating bass. The band repurpose alternative rock by introducing screamo in parallel to harmonic vocals, giving a new meaning to gothic rock. Their generous sound comes from a desire to empower, as Anastasia reflects: “When you listen to us, we hope you feel more powerful and inspired.” The band members also contribute as songwriters on “Bad Omen,” as they pen artistically resonant lyrics with lines like, “dancing with calamity / Chaos in my inner peace.”
The Haunt reflect on the meaning of this song:
“‘Bad Omen’ is what it feels like to finally not give a f”ck. It all vanishes and you don’t care anymore! It’s really freeing to embrace all the weird messed up parts of yourself and finally feel at peace with your chaos.”
“Bad Omen” is an unapologetic anthem for forgiving negative qualities to allow yourself the freedom to simply be. Anastasia sings, “I know there’s something wrong with me,” acknowledging her issues after emphasizing that she knows she is destructive with the line, “I got a silver bullet right between my teeth.”
Max begrudgingly continues this thought in the second verse, referring to this temperament as “kinda poetic, fucking pathetic.” He ultimately confronts his inevitable disposition with, “been a piece of shit since the day I was born.”
Despite these otherwise pessimistic lyrics, Anastasia reminds the listener to take her for what she is and not to repurpose her for something she isn’t. She sings, “so worry about yourself and keep my name out of your mouth,” to acknowledge that she will not change for someone who does not take her for what she is, the “bad omen,” she calls herself.
Released as the third single to their upcoming project, The Haunt are setting up anthemic hard rock in “Bad Omen.”
