Spacey Jane haunts those who can’t let go of previous relationships with “How to Kill Houseplants”

Spacey Jane strikes a chord with listeners who struggle to walk away from a relationship with newly released single, “How to Kill Houseplants.” The song’s title is a metaphor for self-sabotage, describing the difficult task of walking away from something that is already dying. Frontman Caleb Harper reflects on the inspiration behind the track stating,

“I feel awful and I want to save this thing and I don’t know how to do it. I should know how to do this by now, but I don’t: I’ve killed 35 creeping ivies.”

The single feels intimate and hazy, blending acoustic reverb guitars and dreamy vocals. The sound matches the meaning of the song, providing hypnotic rhythms that mirror being stuck in the same cycle.

The Australian indie-rock band is releasing their first album since 2022, If That Makes Sense, on May 9. They collaborated with Mike Crossey, a producer best known for his work with The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys, and songwriters Jackson “Day Wave” Phillips and Sara Aarons, known for their work with Childish Gambino and Miley Cyrus.
