Edginess, raw energy, grunge, “sludgy” riffs, and a super sonic force; these are all words that can describe Seattle’s own female-led rock band, Sludge Mother. Taking inspiration from bands such as Alice In Chains, Sludge Mother unlocks a heap of powerful vocals, unfiltered lyricism and modern visceral rage, becoming a powerhouse in the music industry. The newest single, “I Don’t Want A Job,” gained popularity firstly on TikTok not only for it’s crashing guitar riffs and intense vocals, but also for the representation of struggle in this day and age of society.

“I Don’t Want A Job” explores the anger and struggle of finding a job in a society affected by inflation, a world in which it’s expensive to simply live, sapping the joy out of being human. In an Instagram caption, Cami says this about the song’s creation:

“…Although lyrically, the song didn’t come to me until i was sitting at my computer applying for day jobs haha. literally one tab open was logic & one was indeed. i was so pissed b/c all i wanted to do was write but felt totally split b/c i was so panicked about survival and money and needing another job. i started questioning like yo, is this what life is? worrying about money until we die? working until we die? what about creation? what about connecting? what about running through the long grass? how did we get so far from home?”

“I Don’t Want A Job” joins the ranks of Sludge Mother’s other feral and strikingly beautiful singles “Pig,” “No Temple,” and “When The Earth Swallows Us.” It’s a collection of profound storytelling with compelling lyrics, a diary of past experiences made into melodic odes.
