If the War On Drugs and Beach House had a baby, Slow Collision is what you’d get. Wrapped up in a bundle of shoegaze and post-punk vibes, Slow Collision is a one-man band consisting of Nick Greenberg, who resides in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
The new single, “Everything I Ever Wanted,” is a fuzzy cloud of distortion and crashing melodies, promising a project worth hearing. Greenberg’s voice is haunting behind distortion, and is brought forward using his immersive production techniques.
He tells us about what it is like to feel trapped in a cycle of failure in light of those he adores to be like most, as they harbor self-hatred themselves: “You push it up but it just rolls down from the top / Like you’re racing ‘round a track / Where there’s no start or end / Just somewhere for you to crash.”
“Everything I Ever Wanted” is a full and overflowing track with 80s-like synths, surrounding its listeners like a thick fog in the early morning. The imagery sung by Greenberg is delicate yet borderline miserable in the constant push and pull of comparing oneself to others who also don’t feel like they’re enough. As we dip in and out of the chorus, the message becomes more and more relatable.
This dream pop kaleidoscope of erupting synths and drum beats excites and drives listeners quickly through the song, easily capturing our attention. The harmonies have a similar feel to the band Future Islands, as well as the way Greenberg sings — getting the words out in a deep, raspy and edgy tone, putting everything he has into every word: “How can they hate themselves / Disregard and deflate themselves / How can you hate yourself / When you’re everything I ever wanted to be.”
Slow Collision’s sophomore EP, I’m Too High, I Can’t Jump will be released October 25.
