Samantha Margret’s “midnight oil” pulls back the curtain on celebrity worship

Date:

Indie pop sensation Samantha Margret has released “midnight oil,” the fourth single from her forthcoming album Dream Girl, releasing on October 10, following the release of “hot enough,” “I’m burning” and “to make“. Margret has been gaining traction since her anti-patriarchy single, “RAGE” released on June 24, 2022, the same day that Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court. The angsty single resonated with women across the nation, and Margret has since enjoyed an outpouring of support from all kinds of people who are hungry for change.

In her most recent releases heralding her first studio album, Margret has been true to her roots: dark, heavy, bass-laden mixes with bright, harmonic vocals. Deep, vulnerable lyrical themes paired with strong rhythmic compositions and bold synthesizers. Beyond her compelling vocal performances, her lyrics continue to impress, provoke thought and reflection.

“midnight oil,” confronts the disenchantment that’s bound to come with placing people on undeserved pedestals. People are just people at the at the end of the day; bound to fail and disappoint at some point or another. Margret croons, “They all tried to warn me / My heroes were people / I still painted you in gold… Don’t meet the men you look up to / Looking up only lets you down.” In today’s cultural zeitgeist, celebrity worship is extremely pervasive and increasingly concerning. Margret draws poetic parallels between her unnamed fallen hero and the Wizard of Oz (“You’re just a man when the curtain comes down”).

Margret shared a candid statement on the meaning behind “midnight oil,” sharing:

I’m so tired of men who think they’re gods
because the stage is a few feet above the audience. What’s worse is when I start to believe them. I drink the mixture of cool music and rogue ego and start to think they are who they say they are.

It takes a very precise touch to pair heavy themes with dance music in a way that doesn’t feel clunky and awkward, and Margret has been doing a fine job so far.

“midnight oil” is available to stream wherever you listen to music, and you can pre-save Dream Girl here.
