All summer long, double platinum rapper, singer, and songwriter Paul Russell has kept fans moving. It started with “That Girl,” a nostalgic, feel-good track that featured the incomparable rap stylings of the one and only Saweetie. After that, he followed up the single with “Carat Cake,” which was all about the fun of spoiling someone you love. Both tracks had this contagious, danceable spirit to them, making them must-haves at any wedding, birthday, celebration, or other joyous occasion you found yourself at this year. But even though we have officially entered the fall season, who’s to say that the party has to stop?
On “Keeper,” Paul confesses his commitment to a girl who might not be perfect, but she is perfect for him. Over the light and breezy melodies, Paul sings, “She’s a keeper / She keeps me up tryna please her / And I know therapy’s cheaper / But nothing’s gonna change my mind!” She drives him crazy at times, but that’s the reality of love—finding someone worth going crazy for. In the end, Paul delivers another iconic anthem with this track, blending lively pop riffs with catchy choruses and funky grooves.
About “Keeper,” Paul shares,
“‘Keeper’ is about choosing someone despite all the things about them that might make you want to rip your hair out. She can still be a ‘keeper’ even if she ‘keeps me up tryna please her!’ When we sat down to make ‘Keeper,’ the idea was to create something that felt like the bright, happy, soul music of the late 70s and early 80s. It’s a love song and a celebration song, something we hope can be played in the same settings where you’d hear a song by someone like Lionel Richie or Prince. It represents my commitment to making songs that talk about love in a modern way but using traditional, ‘old school’ instruments and techniques. The idea is to create timeless music—something that people can relate to, no matter what their age is.”
