Paperwhite has released “Looking Back,” the focus single from their new EP Reach, which is now out. This marks the synth-pop duo’s first project in nearly a decade since their 2016 debut EP Escape. “Looking Back” began taking shape during the pandemic, and even years later, its themes remain relevant.
“It came together during a really uncertain time and now, finishing it almost five years later, we’re noticing a lot of those themes still ring true,” the duo said.
Paperwhite, siblings Katie (singer/songwriter) and Ben Marshall (producer/songwriter) collaborated with composer and virtuoso cellist Philip Sheppard for the track. The Marshalls credit Sheppard with helping bring the song to life and infusing it with the sense of hope they had been searching for from the beginning.
Since debuting as a synth-pop act, Paperwhite has received critical praise from outlets including Billboard, VICE and BuzzFeed. They’ve also earned placements on several Spotify editorial playlists and were named “Most Blogged Artist” on Hype Machine twice. The group has performed alongside acts such as Oh Wonder, Sofi Tukker and Great Good Fine Ok, carving out a notable presence in the indie pop scene.
Following their extended hiatus, the Reach EP showcases the duo’s signature synth-driven sound while exploring themes of self-discovery, perseverance and wonder. The result is a nostalgic yet evolving collection that reflects their artistic growth.
“Reach is a reflection of where we’ve been and where we’re going—a collection of songs shaped by longing, nostalgia and the quiet magic of memory,” the duo shared. “We made it for anyone who’s ever felt lost in a dream or found comfort in a feeling they couldn’t quite name. We hope it brings a sense of wonder and a little more light.”
Reach is available now, and Paperwhite says they’re excited to reconnect with longtime fans and welcome new listeners into their world.
