Paige asks “why do we fall in love?” in latest single

Date:

New Zealand-born indie-pop artist Paige has already made a name for herself performing with the likes of Ruel, The Jonas Brothers and Alec Benjamin. Her latest single “why do we fall in love?” from her EP paigesspace is a raw questioning of relationships and love in the amidst of a breakup.

“why do we wanna be in love?” starts with a tangy acoustic plastic guitar. Accompanying the guitar and quietly humming in the back of the song is a droning synth that subtly fills out the soundscape. Following on from the first chorus, electronic guitars, a bass, electric keys and a drum machine join the mix. The movement of the electric keys gives a nice, unique texture to the overall relaxing and simplistic song. Some subtle vocal doublings and backings are all that’s needed to fill out the rest of the song.

The question at the centre is “why do we wanna be in love?,” with Paige trying to deal with the pain of a lost relationship. In describing love, the singer-songwriter states that “it hits you then it runs” and “love kinda sucks.” In the second verse, we learn that these pessimistic thoughts stem from the downfall of a relationship in a “west apartment,” with Paige admitting “you leaving me was not apart of the plan.” While staying safely within the realm of heartbreak ballads, the lyrics feel authentic and raw, as if they’re coming straight out of a journal entry.

These lyrics, combined with the relaxing and close-knit instrumentation, highlight Paige’s unfiltered and honest approach to songwriting and producing, which is making her a growing talent in the indie-pop space.
