‘Oh my god, she likеs The Happy Fits!’ Falling in love with the Lovesick single “Do You See Me?”

Date:

The Happy Fits have done it again: The New Jersey natives spoil fans with another beautiful single off their forthcoming studio album, Lovesick, set to debut on September 19.

Blending orchestral sounds and dramatic lyrics reminiscent of early Panic! At The Disco and The Brobecks, “Do You See Me?” surprises us as it does a complete 180 from the previous upbeat, 80s-sounding single, “Wild in Love.”

Starting on the much softer side, this song gracefully showcases vocalist/cellist Calvin Langman’s vocals and gives his signature cello the spotlight it deserves. The song builds up throughout, eventually incorporating an element that makes the band so unique: A vocal quartet! The harmonies of all members blend seamlessly to make the usual Happy-Fits-magic.

This opening track sets a hopeful tone for the remainder of the album, as the instruments build up and the song flows from a chill, unplugged start into a strong, powerful conclusion. In just a few singles, the indie-rock band has already showcased a dynamic range of what’s to come, with the promise of even more twists and turns to keep their listeners hooked.

“Do You See Me?” feels like a continuation of the band’s What Could Be Better (2020) single “She Wants Me (To Be Loved),” as both songs explore a narrator hopeful that one day their love is requited, with the former a bit more determined about the relationship, forgetting a life before the pair met.

“I don’t remember / Just how it hit me / When you said your favorite bands / Or made me a better man (Oh my god she likes ELO) / I see my life now (His life now) / Two parts so clearly / Thеre was time before we met / But who remembers that?”

The song release was accompanied by a playful music video showcasing drummer Luke Davis, guitarists Nico Rose and Raina Mullen, alongside Langman, performing individually in a meadow. Half of the video seems as though it’s through the lens of binoculars, as the vocalists are looking to be seen as the title asks.

Each released song from Lovesick has accompanying music videos thus far, so one can only hope they keep up the trend for the whole project!

On Saturday, August 16th, a month before its release, the band will perform all 15 tracks off their upcoming album at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, New York.
