Just three weeks after Remi Wolf released “Twiggy”, the first single for her upcoming album Mud, she’s released “Bottle,” an equally raw and emotional track.
The track is built by warm acoustic and electric guitars with an addictively plunky baseline and mid-tempo drums. The heavily layered and fuzzy vocal arrangement sucks listeners in and gives an air of 80s pop, creating the perfect track to blast through your car speakers or headphones. It has an undeniable groove to it, making it addictive and easy to put on repeat.
There’s a clear emotional heaviness behind the upbeat beats and guitar riffs, though. Wolf mentions working with people close to her, allowing her the chance to “crack my chest open and let whatever was in there crawl out.”
The repetition in the chorus mimics the throes of addiction and depression. It seems as though Wolf is reminding herself of her options: “I can’t get the bottle if I don’t get up,” she says.
Directed by Remi Wolf herself alongside Milo Nichols, the music video for “Bottle” depicts her dancing on the beach in an inflatable hamster ball, buried up to her neck in the sand, and hula-hooping. The saturated colors and lip-syncing are reminiscent of the early 2010s music videos that we’re all nostalgic for.
Wolf is honest and real in the video, as viewers see her dragged down to the bottom of a pool by a bottle. But despite the lyrics about addiction and alcohol abuse, the music video feels free and joyful, depicting how she has overcome those hardships.
Wolf’s new album Mud will be available everywhere on October 9, and “Bottle” is available everywhere now.
