Olivia Rodrigo kicks off her next chapter with “drop dead”

Date:

“drop dead” by Olivia Rodrigo marks the start of a new era, one that’s gentler at face value yet no less emotional than before. As the first single off her upcoming album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, it features a much dreamier sound that is defined by heavy synth work, compared to her previous style.

Right from the onset, the track is an example of how grit can be traded in for polish. The fluttering production and pounding rhythms provide a hypnotizing effect, drawing listeners into the frenzied state of mind brought on by infatuation that is simply too exhilarating to be true.

Lyric-wise, she’s still at her best. Rodrigo channels the bittersweet joy of being smitten by using lines that are equal parts comedic, uncertain, and romantic. It’s like she’s aware that she’s going insane and is dragging us into the madness with her. This conflict between the dreaminess of the fantasy and the fear of it all collapsing is what solidifies the song’s emotional depth, which ties into the “sad love songs” vibe she’s talked about for this album.

“drop dead” is so remarkable because of how it transforms the classic tale of Rodrigo’s heartbreaks into something else. Rather than dwelling on the past, her heart being broken because of a failed relationship, she looks at the start of that same relationship, when joy and nervousness were one and the same.

The music video follows a similar trend by incorporating whimsicality and romance into the mix. Despite all the beauty that goes into creating the visuals, there is still something that hints towards an imbalance.

“drop dead” does not compete against the success of Rodrigo’s previous songs, but rather avoids them altogether, showing development in her musical career. This song shows a maturity in the artist in her experimentation with new sounds, as well as an ability to explore the intricacies of love and its psychology even further.
