It is never too late to find a new genre of music to add to your playlist. Every day, you listen to something new, and since powerhouse Japanese group Number_i entered the scene, I would not be surprised if one of their massive hits, “GOAT,” “INZM,” or even their newest single, “BUGS LIFE,” made its way into your day-to-day playlist.
The single was released via Atlantic Records and is a dizzying, high-octane hip-hop fever dream that proves this trio is only getting more daring. It is a move of chaotic brilliance by band members Sho Hirano, Yuta Jinguji, and Yuta Kishi. From the very first second, the beat hits you like a tidal wave of glitchy, industrial bass lines and erratic synth patterns. It feels delightfully insectoid, mimicking the frantic, unpredictable movement of bugs scattering in the dark.
By the time the track ends quite abruptly, you are left feeling energized but slightly disoriented, like the feeling when the lights come on at a party after being in the mosh pit for hours, making you desperate to hit the play button again.
Number_i has crafted a song that is as bizarre as it is addictive. “BUGS LIFE” is a loud, proud statement that J-hip-hop is not only evolving, but also mutating into something completely unstoppable.
“BUGS LIFE” is available now on all streaming platforms.
