Maryn Charlie’s “Hit By Lightning” captures the need to be seen

With “Hit By Lightning”, Amsterdam-based artist Maryn Charlie leans further into the emotional clarity that has been shaping her rise. Sitting comfortably within indie pop and alt pop, the track channels the quiet intensity associated with artists like Holly Humberstone, Billie Eilish, and Lorde, while maintaining a voice that feels distinctly her own.

At its core, “Hit By Lightning” is about visibility — not in a performative sense, but in the deeply personal desire to be seen after feeling overlooked for so long. That tension runs through the track, giving it a quiet urgency that never needs to escalate into something overly dramatic to make its point.

The production is minimal and atmospheric, allowing space for Maryn’s voice to take the lead. Her vocals are the real centerpiece here, soft and almost weightless. There is a delicate quality to her tone that draws you in, especially in the chorus. The repeated “And I, I” lands with a subtle intensity, creating one of the song’s most memorable moments without relying on excess.

Lyrically, she keeps things close and unfiltered. There is no overcomplication, just a clear expression of longing and self-realisation. That honesty is what gives the song its impact. It feels less like a performance and more like a quiet confession, which aligns closely with the themes she continues to explore as an artist.

One of the few frustrations is the song’s length. While shorter tracks have become common, “Hit By Lightning” ends just as it fully settles in. It leaves you wanting more, not only emotionally but also structurally, as if there was space to let the final chorus or atmosphere expand just a little further.

Still, that brevity does not take away from its effect. If anything, it adds to the sense of fragility that runs through the track.

As a focus track from her upcoming EP Threads, “Hit By Lightning” offers a strong glimpse into where Maryn Charlie is heading. It is intimate, restrained, and emotionally precise, carried by a vocal performance that stays with you long after it ends.
