Amidst the millions of heartbreak anthems purely expressing pain, grief, and anger, “Who’s Your Angel Now” narrates the end of colby!’s last relationship from a place of incredible grace, honesty, and self-reconciliation.
In this deeply confessional track, colby! is not afraid to confront her old lover, and she does so with admirable understanding: “Real love gets heavy / So I get you want control / At your suicidal party / I left it all on the floor.” She likens the struggle of healing to leaving her halo at her former lover’s house while realizing she’s no longer a saint, painting a relatable picture of seeing yourself so much through another’s eyes that you forgot who you are without them. The Texas alt-pop artist shares her personal experience that inspired the single:
“‘Who’s Your Angel Now’ came out of my last relationship. His family always called me an angel for doing simple things like listening or showing up, and that word just kind of stuck with me. After I left, I kept coming back to it and eventually wrote the chorus, ‘Who’s your angel now? I left my halo at your house.’ It felt like the perfect way to capture that shift of no longer being that person for someone.”
The song’s highly symbolic, sensual, and ethereal songwriting (“Took your gun to my faith / And your scissors to my wings”) reflects colby!’s creative interests in abstract painting and building dolls’ furniture to cope with dyslexia, as well as her sonic influences from the likes of Amy Winehouse and Gwen Stefani.
