Los Angeles-based, Salt Lake City-born singer-songwriter Mykel is no stranger to finding beauty in chaos. Her latest single, “HOW DO YOU KNOW,” released October 1, is the second offering from her forthcoming debut EP, Hometown Runaway, due out November 7.
With comparisons to Jessie J, Kelly Clarkson, and JoJo, Mykel transforms anxiety into motion. The song, which was written in just two hours with longtime collaborator Todd Tran, was recorded in her home state of Utah, grounding the track in the nostalgia and tension that define her upcoming project.
The EP also features production from GRAMMY-nominated mixer and producer Yang Tan (Janelle Monáe) and three-time RIAA-certified engineer Gehring Miller (Giveon, Ella Mai). Mykel says that her songs are there “To help everyone feel seen. To give myself and others a space to sit with, experience, and explore every emotion without judgement.”
“HOW DO YOU KNOW” follows “Brace for Impact,” inspired by a near-fatal car accident that reshaped Mykel’s outlook on life. Both songs set the tone for Hometown Runaway, a six-track project that Mykel describes as “a beacon of truth and integrity that has both freed and terrified me.”
Though no official tour has been announced, Mykel has hinted at upcoming live performances in Los Angeles, including recent showcases with Breaking Sound LA, where she previewed new material.
