Every Monday, we bring you a playlist filled with new tracks the Melodic staff has been listening to on repeat. Hear some of our latest obsessions below:
——
blackbear, “britney in 07” – The song is titled and inspired by one of the most defining moments in pop culture’s history: in 2007, Britney Spears’ mental health struggles were highly publicized and resulted in mockery. Flipping the narrative, bear uses Spears’ experience as a metaphor for his own struggles, opening the song with “i feel like britney in 07 / u about to catch these hands / going through some shit / it seems like no one understands.”

OAKLND, “airport” – “airport” is the third track off of the artists’ upcoming EP, Chicago. This song in particular, and the overarching theme of the EP as well, takes form from the inspirational story of a girl experiencing a post-college breakup after moving to Chicago as seen in the lyrics: “Now I’m crying / ’cause I heard that you found someone / And the only thing that I found’s your t-shirt in my closet / Still got the stain on the front from the last time you wore it / August was hard, the month that you’re leaving / drove me to the airport / you said ‘see you ’round’ / but I’ll never see you now.”

——
Slow Coast, “Where I’m Supposed to Be” – From beginning to end, “Where I’m Supposed to Be” is filled with catchy hooks, peaking with a bridge that reinforces the rebellious spirit of the song: “What a waste of time / To do this dream of mine / For anyone but me / For anyone.” Lyrically, the record is about following your gut and chasing your dreams regardless of how crazy they sound to other people.

Lyan Paris, “Drugs Don’t Lie” – Ready to show their most authentic and truest selves, Toronto-based alternative hip-hop duo Lyan Paris has released their newest single (and certified summer banger) titled “Drugs Don’t Lie.” The duo, consisting of friends Luke Marshall and Ryan Goulding, have been making music together for more than a decade, amassing millions of views on TikTok and streams on Spotify. Their 2021 debut single “Dimes” earned over 3 millions streams on Spotify alone. The duo aims to shine light on the reflective ups and downs of life in your teens and young adulthood, mental health struggles, and more.
