London-based Lucy Deakin has released a new single titled “Solar Eclipse,” an infectious pop earworm about peacefully moving on from someone. The record marks a stark sonic shift from her 2024 alt-pop EP, WELCOME TO MY CHURCH.
With “Solar Eclipse,” Deakin proves that an uplifting, sunny track can still be effortlessly cool, while her perfectly crafted pop melodies throughout make it an inescapable hit. In the chanty chorus, the singer-songwriter describes how quickly she has turned the page, singing, “Gone gone like the sun / It is what it is / Solar eclipse / Want want what I want / Blink and I’m gone / Calling it quits.”
In the second verse, she switches to a spoken-word delivery, where her British accent comes through as she playfully celebrates her newfound independence: “Dirty rich when I get my fix / I’m not going to quit ’til I find out / What it’s like to be free without you around.”
About the songwriting process and the cathartic meaning of “Solar Eclipse,” Deakin says:
“I wrote it in LA on my birthday at the start of 2024, wanting to create something that felt like a fun summer anthem, the way Gwen Stefani’s ‘The Sweet Escape’ makes you feel. Looking back, the song almost foreshadowed what was to come – I’m so much happier and more carefree now than when I first wrote it.”
Although you can hear Stefani’s influence in her new sound (and vocals at times), Deakin offers a refreshing and unique take on pop music with “Solar Eclipse,” making her an exciting act to watch.
