Lucas Köksal releases his final single “without you” before his first double EP. The dreamy indie rock track tethered with lyrics that carry its emotional depth are simply a tease as to what’s to come. This is the third and final single before the release of his upcoming project and it seemingly covers topics of coming to terms with losing someone in order to be on your own.
Melodically, the beat is reminiscent of what you’d hear on a coming-of-age movie soundtrack with the main character driving down a road late at night. The overall feeling is calm, with wavering synth and percussion that invites the listener’s body to relax and really focus on the music. The electric guitar riff that sounds slightly distorted was also a nice touch against the rest of the instrumental composition. While it falls into indie rock, it’s also in the realm of dream pop, truly a song you can envision in the clouds similarly to Wallows.
Lyrically, much of the song is phrased as an inner monologue. As the listener, you feel as if you’re being let into Köksal’s mind to be able to comprehend what he’s feeling while singing. The lyrics go “What do you advocate / Cut from the garnet / I’d always hesitate / Cause I was hearted / And I just couldn’t let you go.” There’s a sense of vulnerability in admitting that there’s difficulty in letting go and trying to search for reasons to stay. This overall really highlights the true complexities that heartbreak can have.
