On Friday, June 20, KATSEYE released their second single, “Gabriela,” as part of the rollout for their upcoming EP Beautiful Chaos.
Described as Gen Z’s version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” “Gabriela” is a fiery, Spanish-style track about a girl’s vengeful reaction to another woman disrupting her relationship. The song also features the group’s first Spanish verse, performed by Daniela, a first-generation Latina American. The verse marks a milestone for KATSEYE’s mission of becoming a global pop girl group that embraces diversity, multiculturalism and a sound that resonates with listeners from all walks of life.
The group includes members Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia and Yoonchae. “Gabriela” was produced by Andrew Watt and John Ryan. The track arrives with an accompanying music video directed by Andrew Thomas Huang and starring Jessica Alba. The concept draws inspiration from telenovelas, a staple in Latino culture. In the video, Alba plays the CEO of Gabriela Enterprises, announcing she is searching for her successor, sparking chaos as the members of KATSEYE compete for the top spot.
“Our music video for ‘Gabriela’ is vibrant, colorful, dramatic, and full of heart,” explains KATSEYE.
“We leaned into the world of telenovelas because they’re iconic and over-the-top in the best possible way – from the acting to hair and wardrobe. We tried to honor that spirit while having fun with the concept. It’s all love, all homage, and definitely all drama!”
The music video premiered across multiple MTV platforms, including MTV Live and MTV’s Biggest Pop, as well as on the Paramount Times Square billboards.
“Gabriela” follows the group’s breakout single, “Gnarly,” which has become a major success, charting on numerous acclaimed music lists. KATSEYE released “Gnarly” remixes featuring Ice Spice, Lancey Foux and Slush Puppy, landing them on Rolling Stone’s Songs You Need to Know playlist. Billboard also praised the remix, stating, “KATSEYE Heats Up ‘Gnarly’ Summer with Ice Spice Remix.”
KATSEYE debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists and Heatseekers Albums charts with their first EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong), in 2024. With Beautiful Chaos, the group aims to expand their sonic identity and dive into the complexities of modern girlhood.
Beautiful Chaos will be released June 27 on all streaming platforms. The EP includes tracks “Gnarly,” “Gabriela,” “Game Boy,” “Mean Girls” and “M.I.A.”
