It’s been four months since singer-songwriter Kacey Fifield released her latest EP, Nostalgia Haunts Me, which is described as a goodbye letter to her high school self and experiences, and yes, it continues to haunt her. The EP has garnered more than 700,000 streams, as Fifield captivates fans with her infectious pop melodies and introspective lyrics. Her forthcoming single, “Dream Girl”, continues this emotional journey.
The bubbly synth-pop track “Dream Girl” opens with an upbeat tempo but contrasts this with dark and painful lyrics: “Reinvent the wheel before it turns / No true love is real, I get hurt / There’s no way to feel without the burn”. The song explores the theme of losing oneself under pressure while striving to fit the mold of someone’s “dream girl”. Using distorted electro synths and playful percussion, Fifield creates a compelling soundscape that deepens the narrative of trying to conform to an idealized image. She sings, “I’m so unwell / I get possessive / And I lose myself under pressure / Turn to someone else / Just tell me, am I a dream girl?”
Currently based in New York City, Fifield attends Columbia University and builds a strong discography of music that breaks the barriers of indie, alternative and pop. She spoke about what making music means to her
“For at least the next four years, I plan to be in New York City, getting my education while also working on my music career. I’d love to find more co-writers and producers to work with. But mostly, I just want to keep making music that listeners find relatable, inspirational, and cathartic. I love making music that helps people feel big emotions.”
