Toronto-born, LA-based indie band Jane’s Party have followed up their single “Comfortable People” with the carefree “Over You.” With its easygoing mood, listeners of The Happy Fits and Lime Cordiale will love the sounds from the Canadian band.
The song starts with a slight bossa nova feel but is still well within the surf rock genre with wavy guitars and relaxed melodies. A boomy kick drum is in the distance and sounds a little disconnected from the rest of the instrumentation, but easily follows along with the rhythm guitar. There is little change of instrumentation for most of the song, with backing vocals filling out the rest of the soundscape. However, a guitar solo in the bridge has a much sharper tone. This sharper tonality does grab the attention of listeners but dissolves into reverb as the final chorus returns to classic surf rock.
Similar to the instrumentation, the lyrics of “Over You” are relaxed and easy. In the first verse, “I looked around for my common senses” is playful but is filled with internal rhythms that add to the easy flow of the song. The chorus’s “If you’re taking time to find / What love’s about” is a reflection of the overall mood of the song; a nonchalant and easygoing view on growing old and learning about love.
Jane’s Party’s “Over You” plays on the Canadian band’s strengths as artists, delivering a mix of bossa nova and surf rock that makes listeners feel tranquil and untroubled.
