Jake & Shelby unveiled a new, soul-baring track on Friday, inspired by Shelby’s decision to confront painful memories she used to repress from her time in the foster care system.
Motivated by stories from nonprofits that support children entering foster care, Shelby was inspired to share her journey for her first time on the new track, “Morning Light.” She said she was adopted when she was 6 and was reminded when her early experiences after she and Jake spent some time on Cape Cod this fall. While there, the duo sang at an event for the Cape Cod Foster Closet. Touched by the mission of the organization, Shelby turned to write her own story.
“It had never been so easy to put my experience into words before,” Shleby says. “I’m so grateful for the way music so gently heals and brings light from pain. It felt scary to share something so intimate, but I want nothing more than to create music that can help other people feel something real. I posted the song the morning after, and I was so overwhelmed by how much kindness and love [were] shown to me. I realized that this song became something so much bigger than I ever could have imagined. I felt so comforted and seen.”
“Morning Light” is the first taste of new music for Jake & Shelby fans since their debut studio album Learning To Love, offering up a new side to the duo.
