Headphone Hair takes us on a 3 minute and 35 second springy pop journey with their latest release “tellyourfriends”. Detailing the complexities of over sharing in romantic relationships, the song contains heavier topics for its light and airy sound.
Electronic keys start off the song, taking the listener lyrically straight to the source of the relationship. “I just wanna play with you like a toy in a dream”, Headphone Hair sings, the hook repeated again and again. The song’s bassline is the standout, giving it a dance-like quality and pairs well with a twinkly synth.
As the song progresses, the instruments do too. We hear the additions of clapping percussive accents, a tambourine and new backing vocals. “Don’t we get to have a safe place?” speaks to this relationship’s lack of privacy, as any information is privy to be shared with friends. It seems that this is a fact that is accepted, as at the end of each chorus the lyric shift from “I know you tell your friends everything” shifts to a call to action as “You can tell your friends everything”.
It seems that Ian Walters – the brain behind Headphone Hair – is no stranger to juxtaposing song subjects and their sonics.
