Iconic ska-punk band Goldfinger released their high-energy pop-punk collaboration with blink-182’s Mark Hoppus titled “Freaking Out a Bit” via Big Noise.
The track explores themes of anxiety, digital-age burnout and nostalgia through a summer anthem that blends the signature sounds of Goldfinger and blink-182. “Freaking Out a Bit” is a relatable and playful expression of the effects of stress on mental health and the ability to simply get by.
The fast-paced production of the song almost mimics the racing thoughts portrayed in the lyrics, especially with lines like “Am I crazy or losing my mind?” and “So hold on for the time of your life / Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann shares,
“Freaking Out a Bit is a song I wrote with Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus… I had the concept for a song and a chorus, and they came in and brought it to life! Mark wrote the best verses, and Travis turned the beat around in the bridge, which gave it a whole new life of its own. Those guys are some of my best friends and I love them. So grateful I got to do this song with them I’m so glad it’s finally coming out!”
Feldmann has played a key influential force in the modern pop-punk resurgence through guiding the sound of a new generation of artists under his label and production wing. He’s also worked alongside Hoppus many times, as the longtime friends and collaborators previously produced blink-182’s Grammy-nominated 2016 album California together. Now with “Freaking Out a Bit” as the latest product to emerge from their creative minds, the track serves as another strong piece of evidence of the duo’s musical chemistry.
Goldfinger has been at the forefront of the ska-punk and pop-punk genres since the mid-90s. Their nearly three-decade-long career has had a major influence on the scene with hits like “Superman” and “99 Red Balloons” under their belt.
Goldfinger is also set to appear at the sold-out date of the Vans Warped Tour in Long Beach, CA later this month.
