Cody Gray’s indie-pop/funk project goes by the name of Floral Couches. This project draws from feelings of musical nostalgia and the sonic influences of jazz & soul music to create an atmosphere that listeners will want to get lost in. Floral Couches began releasing in 2016, but their latest album Xtra Mild follows their almost 4-year hiatus.
Track 5 On Xtra Mild is “Loved By You” which immediately hooks you in with a low slap-bass. The mixture of the ambient piano with the drums that carry Gray’s vocals along the funky melody makes for such a smooth treat for your ears. This track is equally sensual as it is groovy. The lyrics in the chorus repeat “I just wanted to be loved by you, by you” before exploding into a synth-filled musical break with lots of fun percussive elements that add dimension and texture to the already colorful track. This song is so easy to love- there’s so much in the track to follow along with. You can listen once through to just focus on the funk in the bass, and then once more for the satisfying drum fills you may have missed.
