“Space Opera” is London-based Fast Money Music’s latest single, featuring a stream-of- consciousness-like story with a plethora of stylistic blends. This is FMM’s third single from their upcoming EP, ROUGE. The indietronica track features The 1975’s drummer and producer George Daniel and saxophonist John Waugh. Taking inspiration from punk and pop, Fast Money Music recounts an interaction so out of this world that it had just to be written about.
The introduction is dynamic as we wait a few measures to hear the speak-singing voice of FMM. Immediately, synthesizers and electric guitars make their presence known. The first verse dives into the confusion of where this person of romantic interest is from, FMM confessing “You make me so starstruck, baby”. A guitar solo distinguishes the end of the chorus to the second verse, where we hear the motives of the singer as they ask “Why can’t I be up there with you, too?”
From the chorus to the bridge, a jazzy saxophone comes in and is immediately reminiscent of The 1975’s “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)”. We hear the chorus once again and the instrumental builds to an uplifting outro that ends intentionally haphazardly.
BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders comments on “Space Opera”, stating “This thing has been a really exciting discovery for me… it’s certainly post-punk, hints at new wave, and is really good at painting a picture, but causing the chaos in equal measures.”
